The Temple Mount Sifting Project

 Origins and Background: A Midnight Crisis

The Temple Mount Sifting Project (TMSP) was born out of an archaeological crisis. In 1999, the Islamic Waqf, which manages the Temple Mount site, initiated a massive underground construction project to expand the el-Marwani Mosque. Using heavy bulldozers and excavators—and operating without archaeological supervision—they dug out a massive pit. Over 400 truckloads of soil, representing thousands of years of human history, were unceremoniously scooped up, driven out of the Old City, and illegally dumped into the nearby Kidron Valley like common garbage.

For archaeologists, this was a disaster. Traditional archaeology relies on "stratigraphy"—the careful, layer-by-layer unearthing of items to determine exactly when and how they were deposited. Once bulldozed, that context was destroyed forever. However, archaeologists Dr. Gabriel Barkay and Zachi Dvira realized that while the context was lost, the artifacts themselves were still buried in the dirt. In 2004, they initiated the TMSP with a single goal: to sift through the discarded debris and rescue whatever history remained.

The Wet-Sifting Process: A New Archaeological Standard

Because the soil of the Temple Mount is heavily saturated with ash and fine dust, traditional "dry sifting" was nearly useless; small artifacts were coated in a thick layer of dirt that made them look exactly like ordinary pebbles. To solve this, the project pioneered a systematic "wet-sifting" process that revolutionized salvage archaeology:

1.     Dry Sifting: The debris is first run through a dry screen to break down large clumps and separate out the largest stones and modern trash.

2.     Soaking: The remaining material is placed into buckets and soaked in water to loosen mud and heavy clay from potential artifacts.

3.     Wet Sifting: The material is spread across mesh screens inside large greenhouse tents. Using water hoses, the dust and ash are gently washed away. Suddenly, ordinary-looking lumps of dirt are revealed to be ancient glass, carved bone, or metal.

4.     Sorting: The cleaned material is carefully scrutinized by hand. Artifacts are sorted into distinct categories: pottery, glass, bone, metal, mosaic cubes (tesserae), and special stones.

The Sheer Volume of Discoveries

This meticulous washing process has yielded a staggering 635,000 recovered artifacts. The sheer scale of the work required a massive community effort. Over the past two decades, more than 261,000 volunteers—including students, tourists, and locals of all backgrounds—have stood at the washing screens. Together, their hands have uncovered:

·        Over 6,000 ancient and modern coins, serving as perfect historical time-stamps.

·        Thousands of fragments of animal bones, providing crucial insight into the ancient diet and the sacrificial practices of the Temple.

·        Massive quantities of pottery sherds spanning from the Bronze Age through the Crusader and modern eras.

First Temple Period Finds (1000–586 BC)

Roughly 15% of the pottery recovered by the project dates to the Iron Age, corresponding directly with the First Temple period. Before the TMSP, physical evidence from the First Temple on the Mount itself was incredibly scarce. Key discoveries from this era include:

·        The Immer Bulla: A 7th–6th century BC clay seal impression (bulla) bearing the name "Immer." The Immers were a prominent biblical priestly family whose members served in the Temple (Pashhur, son of Immer, is mentioned in Jeremiah 20:1). This tiny piece of clay likely secured a sack of goods or documents related to the Temple treasury.

·        Warfare Artifacts: Volunteers recovered rare Scytho-Iranian arrowheads, a specific type of ammunition used by the archers of Nebuchadnezzar II. These small points of metal provide tangible, physical evidence of the Babylonian siege that ultimately destroyed the First Temple in 586 BC.

·        Everyday Temple Life: Over 130 typical Judahite figurine fragments were found, along with Judean stone weights (marked with the shekel symbol) that were used for commerce and taxation.


Second Temple Period Finds (516 BC – 70 AD)

The era of King Herod's massive expansion of the Temple Mount left the most significant physical footprint in the debris. Over 40% of all recovered pottery dates to this period, alongside items that give us a glimpse into the grandeur of the complex before its destruction by the Romans in 70 AD.

·        Opus Sectile Paving Tiles: The project recovered around 600 colored, geometric stone tiles cut from imported marble and local stone. Specialists identified these as opus sectile (Latin for "cut work"), a highly prestigious flooring technique that was much more expensive than standard mosaics. By analyzing the angles and dimensions, researchers successfully reconstructed the magnificent, multi-colored floor patterns that paved the open courtyards of the Herodian Second Temple. These are the very floors that pilgrims, merchants, and historical figures of the era would have walked upon.

·        Revolt Coins: Numerous coins from the Great Jewish Revolt against Rome (66–70 AD) were discovered, minted by the rebels and stamped with phrases like "Freedom of Zion," marking the final, desperate years of the Second Temple.

Current Status and Future Plans

Since its inception, the project has successfully sifted approximately 70% of the salvaged soil. The physical sifting operations were eventually halted when major foundation funding was withdrawn, forcing the project to rely heavily on crowdfunding and to pursue official state sponsorship.

Currently, the TMSP's primary focus has shifted to the laboratory. Archaeologists are meticulously researching, cataloging, and publishing scientific reports on the massive backlog of recovered artifacts. Their future goal is clear: to secure the necessary funding to resume wet-sifting the remaining 30% of the soil, ensuring that the final remnants of the Temple Mount's history are saved from the dump and restored to the historical record.
